Twenty-three years ago, Blair Johnson’s parents were gritting their teeth and were developing frequent headaches. It was at that moment in time that Blair picked up his first guitar. It soon became apparent that the guitar was the source of the headaches. As he became more proficient in his playing, the headaches went away, and things finally settled back down. The 80’s were a time for musical experimentation from folk to hard rock and back again. It was at this time that Blair realized that he was not content playing other artists music. Creatively, this was very unrewarding. Rather, he felt the urge to write.
Serious playing and writing were put on hold over the next decade to make room for dental school, two residencies, a master’s degree, marriage and family. The spark of musical creativity was rekindled in the late 90’s when he received a new guitar as an anniversary gift from his wife. Her support and encouragement were the catalyst for future creativity.
Occasionally events can take place in our lives which change and redefine who we are. In 1999, Blair and Susan were blessed with their first born son Connor. Connor was diagnosed with a terminal illness which he battled bravely for 2 ½ years. Two things happened during this time. Blair’s faith in the Lord not only was tested but also was strengthened significantly. In addition, the catharsis of music swelled and overflowed. It was at this time that Blair started to record his music.
His first CD entitled Arrival was a rudimentary collection of ballads and instrumental music. A more serious compilation of instrumental guitar music, aptly named Looking Within, was then released. After Connor’s passing, a tribute CD of songs written for Connor was produced. The proceeds of this CD, entitled Angel’s Touch, were used to create a memorial fund in his son’s name.
Blair’s fourth compilation of music is his strongest yet. The CD, Here And Now, contains eleven original contemporary Christian songs. Blair is responsible for all instrument and vocal tracks. While this CD is guitar-oriented, it also contains piano and orchestral arrangements which weave a beautiful tapestry of praise. Overall, the CD is an inspiring testimony of faith. Blair’s musical style has been compared to Michael Card and Chris Tomlin.
Blair resides in Eau Claire, Wisconsin where he lives with wife Susan, daughter Emily, and infant son Ian. He frequently performs his music at Trinity Lutheran Church in Eau Claire where he plays bass, electric, and acoustic guitar in the contemporary worship group.
